DeKnight (TV's " Spartacus") doesn't just decide, "Well, the portal that we thought we'd closed is open again, and there are more monsters, so everybody saddle up," because that would've been as lame as the plot of the " Independence Day" sequel. To its credit, this sequel from director Steven S. One is that the whole sequel storyline feels like a sad afterthought to the original, which saw various two-person crews of misfit eccentrics overcoming their animosities and neuroses to become one mind, operate their machines, and bash, smash and burn giant beasts who'd slipped through a dimensional portal at the bottom of the sea.

But there are two major problems, and the movie never manages to overcome either of them. Three Kaiju ( Raijin, Hakuja, and Shrikethorn) emerge from artificial Breaches created by the drone hybrids, and make landfall in MegaTokyo. The Precursors mission to reach Mount Fuji was temporarily halted to kill K-Science officer, Newton Geiszler, who learned of their plans after Drifting with a secondary Kaiju brain. One of the last Kaiju to actively seek out Mount Fuji was Mutavore, who demonstrated the ineffectiveness of the Anti-Kaiju Wall as well. Though their efforts were repeatedly thwarted by the Pan Pacific Defense Corps Jaegers, the PPDC remained unaware of the Kaiju's true intentions beyond destruction of coastal cities. If the Kaiju reached the volcano, it would commit suicide inside, triggering an eruption that would terraform the planet for the Precursors to inhabit. With blood designed to react to the "rare earth minerals" within the active volcano, Kaiju emerging from the Mariana Trench, and attacking various cities of across the Pacific Rim, were all working to reach Tokyo, Japan.
Since the beginning of the Kaiju Wars, the Precursors have sent the Kaiju through the Breach with the intention of going to Mount Fuji.
